OUR NEVADA STORIES LAUNCHES ONLINE STORY GATHERING PROGRAM
- Celebrate Nevada Day by Sharing Stories of Life in the Silver State -
Reno, Nev. (October 29, 2025) – As part of the Semiquincentennial anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, and with the generous support of the NV Energy Foundation, the Nevada Division of Museums and History and Nevada Arts Council have teamed up to collect stories from Nevadans for the first statewide oral history archive. This historic archive will be curated as an audio time capsule comprised of stories of multiple generations and perspectives.
State of Nevada Folklorist Brad McMullen will be gathering stories about Nevada from in-person interviews and an online portal – Their Story. The audio and video clips will then be used to create a podcast series launching in 2026. The content will also be used in State Museum exhibits and kept in a statewide archive in perpetuity. The online submission system is open and ready for submissions and may be accessed from the America250 Nevada website, America250Nevada.org. On the Our Nevada Stories page, there are three options from which to choose to tell a story:
- Tell a Nevada Day with themed prompts about traditions and past experiences;
- A non-specific Nevada-related story with questions on family origin and community;
- Tell a story without any prompts or themes.
Detailed instructions are outlined on the site to guide users through the process.
“We truly believe that everyone has a story,” said Brad McMullen, state Folklorist. “It is in these small stories that make the culture and fabric of our community.” As a result of the NV Energy Foundation partnership, staff will visit Nevada cities and towns to gather one-on-one interviews with local leaders and community members that will also be archived as part of the project. In addition to the online portal, those interested in telling their unique stories within an interview process are invited to contact Brad directly at bmcmullen@nevadaculture.org.
